Welcome to the wonderful world of Portuguese Podengos
The Portuguese Podengo is thought to be a descendant of the African wolf, designed by the Pharaoh's hunters to hunt wild boar and hare. They are believed to have been brought to what is now Portugal in pre-Roman times { their likeness having been depicted in Roman mosaics and Roman medalion/coin at the Roman ruins in Conimbriga .}
Today we are blessed by the wisdom of the Portuguese breeders to allow the breed to self select ... hence the Medio smooth coats have no know birth defects or propensities to diseases. They have retained all of their sharp primitive senses.
They are very bright, inquisitive, alert to their surroundings, enjoy the company of people [adults, children and babies] and they can entertain themselves. While they are not lap dogs they are world-class snugglers. They are a delight to watch move freely. Their speed, quickness and agility are amazing.
Portuguese Podengos come in three sizes [Grande, Medio, and Pequeno ] and two hair types [ wire-haired and smooth coat.] This web site is focused only on the Medio Smooth Coat. There are excellent web sites that will provide you with more information about the breed and breeders around the world:
